JAMES GORTON, Oboe soloist, Oct 23.
Co-Principal Oboist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, James Gorton
was formerly Assoc. Principal and Acting Principal Oboe of the orchestra. Prior
to joining in 1971, Mr. Gorton was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, t
he Eastman-Rochester, and Principal Oboe of the Rochester Chamber Orchestra.
From 1971 to 1986 he was Principal Oboe of the Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh
Ballet Theatre. He has also been Principal Oboe of the Colorado
Philharmonic, New Hampshire Music Festival, Aspen Festival Orchestra, as well as
oboist and English horn of the Bethlehem Bach Festival and Lake George Opera Festival.
As a soloist, Mr. Gorton gave the Pittsburgh Premiere of Witold Lutoslawski's Double
Concerto for Oboe, Harp and Chamber Orchestra with harpist Gretchen Van Hoesen.
Mr. Gorton presented the Rochester prenier of L'Horloge de flore by Jean Francaix with the Eastman-Rochester
Orchestra. Together with trumpeter Charles Lirette and conductor Michael Lankester, Mr. Gorton performed the
Hertel Concerto in E flat with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as soloist with the Colorado
Philharmonic, New Hampshire Music Festival, Johnstown Symphony, Carnegie Symphony and the Main Line Symphony
in Philadelphia.
As a chamber musician and recitalist, Mr. Gorton was a founder of the New Pittsburgh
Quintet, which has played throughout the U.S.
